Abstract

Experiment was conducted for the summer season of 2009 at the College Agronomy Farm, B.A. College of Agriculture, Anand Gujarat in order to find out the effect of phosphorus and sulphur on cluster bean, three levels of phosphorus and sulphur (0, 20 and 40 kg P₂O₅ and S ha^-1) were applied. The yield of cluster bean (beed and stover) and nutrient uptake were influenced by the rate of phosphorus and sulphur. Application of 40 kg P₂O₅ and S ha^-1 gave significantly higher yield and nutrient uptake (N, P, K and S) by cluster bean.

Abstract

Nine treatments comprised of three levels of phosphorus (P₀, P₁ and P₂) and Sulphur (S₀, S₁ and S₂) were tested in Factorial Randomized Block Design with four replications in field experiment conducted during summer season 2009-10. phosphorus and sulphur were applied @ 20 kg ha^-1 and 40 kg ha^-1 as DAP and gypsum, respectively. Initial available phosphorus was medium whereas an S content was low in the soil. Yield and quality parameter of cluster bean were increased by the treatments P₂ and S₂ over control. The study of nutrient content of seed revealed that application 40 kg ha^-1 of either phosphorus or sulphur treatments favourably influenced in comparison to their respective control. The nutrient status of soil after harvest crop was also shown highest at the rate of 40 kg ha^-1 either phosphorus or sulphur.

Abstract

A pot house study was conducted on sewage irrigated Fluventic Ustochrepts soils of peri urban area of Vadodara to study the effect of Pb and FYM on spinach yield, Pb uptake and different forms of Pb after spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). The soils were treated with six levels of Pb (0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg Pb kg soil^-1) and two levels of FYM (0,1%). The results revealed that the significant reduction in yield of spinach was noticed at 80 mg Pb kg^-1 soil application. The uptake of nutrients viz., P, K, Fe and Zn decreased at higher Pb level. Amongst the different forms of Pb after spinach, the per cent reduction in Fe-Mn oxide bound Pb and increase in other forms was noticed in sewage irrigated soil. On the other hand, when the spinach was grown on sewage irrigated soil with the application of FYM, percentage of total Pb increased except that of residual Pb. The percentage of exchangeable Pb of total Pb decreased due to Pb addition; and the decrease was comparatively higher in the presence of FYM. The relative abundance of various fractions of Pb after spinach in sewage irrigated soils was in the order: Residual Pb>Fe-Mn oxides bound Pb>Organically bound Pb>Carbonate bound Pb>Exchangeable Pb. The spinach leaf yield negatively correlated with enrichment of carbonated bound Pb (r=-0.763**), organically bound Pb (r=-0.588**) and Fe-Mn oxide bound Pb (r=-0.425**) in the soil. The results indicate that the FYM addition modified the distribution of various Pb fractions leading to reduction in the availability of Pb. Therefore, FYM application could show beneficial effect to mitigate the adverse effect of Pb in the high Pb containing sewage irrigated soil.

Abstract

A field experiment on this crop (variety GFB 1) was conducted in R.B.D. with three replications during summer-monsoon seasons of 2003 and 2004 on different sites to study the influence of various levels of N, K and S. There were two levels of N viz.,100 and 150 kg ha^-1, three treatments of K viz., 0, 40 kg K₂O ha^-1 applied either entirely as basal and 50% as basal and remaining in two equal splits after first and second cuts and three levels of S viz., 0, 20 and 40 kg S ha^-1. There were three cuts in each year. Initial available N, K and S contents in soil were low, medium and marginal, respectively in their status. Yield of green forage, dry matter yields were increased by application of N, K and S. There was 31.8 per cent increase in green forage yield due to nitrogen (N₂) over that of N₁ (521.4 q ha^-1), 9.8 and 19.4 per cent increase for K₁ and K₂ over that of K₀ (550.7 q ha^-1) and 3.78 and 7.86 per cent increase for sulphur-S₁ and S₂ over that of S₀ (581.7 q ha^-1), respectively. Similarly the dry forage yield was also increased. The yield increase due to N, K and S treatment was supported by increase in growth parameters such as tillers per meter row length, number of internodes per plant and plant height. The beneficial effect due to K particularly that of K₂ may probably due to dominance of intensity factor in K supply mechanism.

Abstract

Eighteen treatments comprising of combination of three levels of FYM (0, (F₀), 10 (F₁) and 20 (F₂) t ha^-1) and six nutrient management treatments [control (M₀), Fe (M₁), Zn (M₂), S (M₃), Fe+Zn (M₄) and Fe+Zn+S (M₅)] were tested in factorial randomized block design with three replications in field experiments conducted during Kharif and summer seasons of 2003 and 2004. Fe, Zn and S were applied @ 10, 5 and 40 kg ha^-1 as FeSO₄, ZnSO₄ and gypsum, respectively. Initial available S, Fe and Zn contents in the soil were low. Yield of green forage and dry forage were increased by the treatments F₂ and F₁ (8.5 and 5.3 %, respectively) over treatment F₀. The treatments M₅ and M₄ significantly increased the green fodder yield by 13.0 and 8.5 per cent, respectively, over that of M₀ (731.5 q ha^-1). The study of quality parameters viz., crude protein content, neutral detergent fiber and sugar content revealed that application of FYM at F₁ and F₂ as well as Fe-Zn-S treatments favourably influenced the quality parameters in comparison to their respective control.

Abstract

The results of field experiment conducted at Agronomy Farm, B.A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand revealed that sulphur showed the significant effect on quality and yield of soybean in Iceptisol, irrespective of sources, oil and protein content in soybean grain was significantly higher at application of 40 kg S ha^-1 in form of gypsum. The grain and straw yield also significantly increased due to same dose of sulphur, where oil and protein content were recorded 22.7 and 35.9 per cent, respectively.
